 Depuis 2006, le 10 mai est la « journée nationale des mémoires de la traite des êtres humains, de l'esclavage et de leur abolition ».

La terre indienne du Jardin des Plantes de Montauban, dédiée aux nations Osage et Cherokee fait référence à l’Oklahoma qui fut une terre de déportation des tribus indiennes des États-Unis. C’est la raison pour laquelle elle avait été choisie, ce 10 mai 2018 pour dénoncer ces crimes contre l’humanité.

Trois associations avaient collaboré à la préparation de cette commémoration : *Esclavages, Mémoires présentes  *Oklahoma-Occitania  *Asso Kalou

Since 2006, May 10 is the « National Day of Remembrance of the Trafficking in Human Beings, Slavery and their Abolition ».
The Indian land of the Botanical Garden  of  Montauban, dedicated to the Osage and Cherokee nations, refers to Oklahoma, which was a land of deportation of the Indian tribes of the United States. That is why it was chosen on May 10, 2018, by three associations to denounce these crimes against humanity.

 La cérémonie était présidée par le Préfet du Tarn-et-Garonne. Plusieurs élus du Conseil régional et  du Conseil départemental ainsi que des officiers supérieurs de la gendarmerie, de la police nationale et des pompiers l’honoraient de leur présence. The ceremony was chaired by the Prefect of Tarn-et-Garonne. Several elected officials of the Regional Council and the County Council as well as senior officers of the gendarmerie, the national police and firefighters honored him with their presence.

Le Maître de Cérémonie, Norbert Sabatié (MC No Bear) annonçait les interventions qui allaient se succéder. The Master of Ceremonies, Norbert Sabatié (MC No Bear) announced the interventions that would follow one another.

Oklahoma-Occitania : Gérard Massip et Jean-Claude Drouilhet justifiaient le choix de cette terre indienne par l’hommage rendu aux Indiens du continent américain victimes de l’esclavage et de la déportation de plus de quarante tribus en Oklahoma en évoquant la tragique « Piste des Larmes ». Oklahoma-Occitania: Gérard Massip and Jean-Claude Drouilhet justified the choice of this Indian land by paying tribute to the Indians of the American continent who were victims of slavery and the deportation of more than forty tribes in Oklahoma by evoking the tragic «Trail tears ».

Madeleine Carrenco, de l’Académie de Montauban rendit un vibrant hommage à  Léopold Senghor par la lecture de plusieurs de ses poèmes. Madeleine Carrenco of the Montauban Academy paid homage to Leopold Senghor by reading several of his poems.

Ginette Adamson, citoyenne des Etats-Unis, professeur à l'université de Wichita (Kansas) et artiste peintre, décrivit son parcours atypique avec l’attention toute particulière qu’elle a toujours porté aux autochtones des Amériques depuis ses origines en Haïti jusqu’en Oklahoma où elle réside. Ginette Adamson, a US citizen, professor at the University of Wichita, Kansas and painter, described her atypical career with the special attention she has always paid to the natives of the Americas from her origins in Haiti to Oklahoma where she resides.

Patrice Garrigues témoigna de l’attention que porte le Conseil régional d’Occitanie aux devoir de mémoire. Son discours improvisé toucha le cœur du public. Patrice Garrigues testified to the attention given by the Regional Council of Occitanie to the duties of memory. His improvised speech touched the hearts of the public.

Enfin, Pierre Besnard, Préfet du Tarn-et-Garonne prononça un discours très émouvant rappelant les crimes contre l’humanité que furent les déportations d’êtres humains, la traite avilissante dont ils furent les marchandises et leur mise en esclavage. Pierre Besnard, Prefect of Tarn-et-Garonne delivered a very moving speech recalling the crimes against humanity that were the deportations of human beings, the degrading trade of which they were the goods and their enslavement.

Les gerbes furent déposées devant la stèle de la terre indienne sur laquelle on peut lire :

« En novembre 1829, trois Indiens d’Amérique de la nation Osage, abandonnés en Europe, furent accueillis et réconfortés à Montauban. Ils retournèrent dans leur pays grâce à la générosité des Montalbanais. En souvenir de cette émouvante histoire et en reconnaissance de l’hospitalité chaleureuse que les Indiens d’Amérique ont toujours réservée à leurs visiteurs français, le 21 juillet 1992 la ville de Montauban, représentée par son maire M. Hubert Gouze, a donné solennellement cette parcelle de terre aux tribus Osage et Cherokee représentées par leurs délégués. Ami visiteur, vous êtes ici devant une terre indienne. Respectez-la comme, de tous temps, les Indiens ont respecté la terre-mère.  La Terre n’appartient pas à l’homme ; l’Homme appartient à la Terre --- Chef Seattle. 1854 »
The wreaths were placed in front of the stela of the Indian land on which one can read:
« In November 1829, three American Indians of the Osage nation, abandoned in Europe, were welcomed and comforted at Montauban. They returned to their country thanks to the generosity of the citizens of Montauban. In memory of this moving story and in recognition of the warm hospitality that the American Indians have always reserved for their French visitors, on July 21, 1992 the city of Montauban, represented by its mayor Mr. Hubert Gouze, solemnly gave this piece of land to Osage and Cherokee tribes represented by their delegates. Friend visitor, you are here in front of an Indian land. Respect it as, at all times, the Indians respected Mother Earth. “Earth does not belong to man; Man belongs to the Earth” --- Chief Seattle. 1854 »

Belle cérémonie avec beaucoup d'émotion sans doute.Il est difficile d'imaginer dans les faits, l'horreur d'une telle pratique.Pour ce qui me concerne, je suis honoré d'avoir eu, et Monsieur Gouze et vous, Jean Claude, comme professeurs.

Très belle cérémonie. La variété des participants montre à quel point nous sommes tous concernés par ce triste épisode de l'histoire. Il faut se souvenir, et ne pas oublier que l'esclavage n'a pas totalement disparu.
