During the last week of September 2012, the Oklahoma-Occitania Association invited Mr Ernie LaPointe  to come in Occitania help us defend our land of Frau. Ernie LaPointe is the great grand son of Sitting Bull and the last living descendant of the famous chief of the Sioux

“Frau” is the Occitan name of an area (70 miles north from Montauban) which is rich in legend and tradition and where the inhabitants are so much related to their land that they cannot consider controlling it any more.

 

A major international company (Imerys Ceramics) is coveting the minerals from the soil and making plans to buy the land from the real owners, the farmers settled there for generations and who are aware of Sitting Bull’s reply to those who wanted to buy his land.

 

 In May 1868, to the Jesuit missionary Father Pierre Jean de Smet who tried to persuade him to accept the treaty of Fort Laramie, Sitting Bull answered :

 

« I want everyone to know that I do not plan to sell any part of my country, I do not want that more Whites cut our trees along rivers, especially the oaks ... I particularly like small clumps of oaks. I like to watch and I have respect for them because they are resistant to torments of Winter and the Summer heat and that, as human beings, they seem better to stay healthy »

 

 Lavercantière is a village of Frau. The mayor of Lavercantière, Mr Gilles Vilard, decided to organize the people into a demonstration to defend their land. Our Oklahoma-Occitania association decided to help him, and other associations joined us, too. That is why we have asked Mr Ernie LaPointe, Sitting Bull’s great grandson, to come and speak on behalf of the glorious past of the Lakota people.

 In the village of Lavercantière, this Fall, a ceremony will be held at the War Memorial which is  a very special one, showing a broken-hearted mother whispering “Poor children” (“paures dròlles”as it says in Occitan language).

 The mayor of Lavercantière agrees to dedicate a piece of land to “Brotherhood”. A tree will be planted there by the mayor and Ernie LaPointe. Other Indian Nations will certainly be represented (Osage, Stoney, Innu). We want this event to be a great one.

 All week long, Ernie LaPointe will visit Montauban and old medieval villages in the area. In Montauban he will be welcomed by officials and have the opportunity of visiting schools, meeting associations and sharing with people at several receptions, such as in the Cadillac museum of Saint Nicolas de la Grave (Antoine de Lamothe Cadillac who founded Detroit, Michigan, was born in this village). There, we will also go to the Indian land dedicated to the Choctaw and Seminole Nations and to many other places “given” to other Indian Nations.

Durant la dernière semaine de septembre 2012, l’association Oklahoma-Occitania a invité M. Ernie LaPointe à venir en Occitanie nous aider à défendre notre terre du Frau.

 Ernie LaPointe est l’arrière petit-fils de Sitting Bull et le dernier descendant vivant du célèbre chef des Sioux.

« Lo Frau » (la frayeur) est le nom occitan d’une région située à environ 120 km au nord de Montauban. Elle est riche de légendes et de traditions et ses habitants y sont tellement attachés qu’ils ne puissent imaginer en être obligés de la quitter.

 Une multinationale, Imerys Ceramics, est très intéressée par les minéraux du sous-sol du Frau et projette d’acheter ces terres à leurs actuels propriétaires, des paysans qui y vivent depuis des générations. Ils se réfèrent à la réponse que fit Sitting Bull à ceux qui lui proposaient d’acheter sa terre.

 En mai 1868, le père jésuite Pierre-Jean de Smet qui s’efforçait de convaincre Sitting Bull de signer le traité de Fort Laramie obyint de celui-ci la réponse suivante :

« Je veux que tout le monde sache que je ne désire pas vendre la moindre parcelle de ma terre, que je ne veux pas non plus que les Blancs coupent nos arbres le long des rivières, surtout les chênes. J’aime tout particulièrement les petits bosquets de chênes. J’aime les regarder et j’éprouve du respect pour eux parce qu’ils résistent aux tourments de l’hiver et à la chaleur de l’été et que, comme nous les êtres humains, ils ne paraissent que mieux s’en porter. »

Lavercantière est un village du Frau. Le maire de Lavercantière, M. Gilles Vilard, a décidé d’accueillir une manifestation de personnes décidées à  préserver leur terre. Notre association Oklahoma-Occitania et d’autres associations vont s’associer à cette cause. C’est pour cela que nous avons demandé à Mr Ernie LaPointe, l’arrière petit-fils de Sitting Bull de venir nous soutenir et parler au nom du glorieux passé du peuple Lakota

Au village de Lavercantière, cet automne, une cérémonie sera organisée au monument aux morts de la guerre 1914-18 qui se distingue de tous les autres. Il représente une mère éplorée qui murmure « Pauvres enfants » (« paures dròlles » en Occitan )

Le maire de Lavercantière accepte de dédier une parcelle de terre de sa commune à la « Fraternité humaine ». Un arbre y sera planté conjointement par la maire et Ernie LaPointe. D’autres nations indiennes seront certainement représentées (Osage, Stonez, Innu). Nous voulons donner à cet événement un caractère exceptionnel.

Tout au long de la semaine, Ernie LaPointe visitera Montauban et les villages médiévaux de la région. A Montauban il sera reçu par les personnalités officielles. Il aura l’occasion de visiter des écoles, de rencontrer des associations et des gens. Il visitera le musée Cadillac à Saint Nicolas de la Grave ( le village natal d’Antoine de Lamothe-Cadillac, le fondateur de la ville de Detroit dans le Michigan ). A Saint Nicolas, nous irons aussi sur la terre indienne dédiée aux nations Seminole et Choctaw, ainsi que sur d’autres terres indiennes de la région.
